New Year's Resolutions to Improve Your Work Life

With the close of another year comes the desire to make a change. It is an innate character trait we all have that drives us to improve and continue to get better. For the new year, what better place to implement a New Year's resolution than your career? Whether you are the CEO of a fortune 500 company, or an entry level social media manager at a lower tier marketing company, there are always areas to improve to make yourself a better employee which will only serve to improve your career.

Are you the big dog at the office, or at least in charge of a group of people at your position? Learn how to delegate tasks out to those working underneath you.  For one, this will stress off you and allow you to perform better on a small amount of tasks rather than mediocre on a large amount of tasks. Secondly, delegating more tasks out to your employees will give them a greater sense of responsibility and can in turn, improve their work performance. Keeping everything organized for yourself and these employees will also make your life a million times more manageable.

Let's say you are not the person running the show, and instead are the employee turning out task after task to help improve your company.  There are still plenty of areas where you can improve to make yourself a harder worker and further your career.  One of the biggest things you can do for your career is learning the type of skills that are currently sought after highly in the job market and setting out to master those tasks. Whether they are applicable at your current job, or they can help give a boost to your resume when you are out looking for your next position, learning new tasks that are in demand will entice employers to hire and retain you for years to come.

Another important thing you can do for your career that is often overlooked is going out and making a real effort in networking. Making connections in your field of work will typically carry you farther than you could ever imagine. Sadly, the phrase "it is not what you know, but who you know" is one that is all too common and applicable in today's workforce. This can also work to your advantage however, if you make a conscious decision to go out and network and make real life connections that will further your career.

Follow these tips to make 2015 the biggest year of your career.  Land that dream job or get the promotion you have been working years towards. Little things today can pay off huge dividends in the end. Do you have any other suggestions? Let us know in the comments!

Why Plants Are Important to Your Office Space

Stress in the office, never heard of it, right? Wrong! In fact, aren’t the words stress and office synonyms? In a lot of cases, the answer is yes, but all kidding aside, did you know having plants in the office space reduces stress? It does. Significantly! It not only decreases stress, it increases productivity, makes the office more comfortable, and environmentally awesome. Here are some great reasons why it would be beneficial to incorporate greenery into your office.

Reduces Stress
Helen Russell from the Surrey University in the U.K., master’s environmental psychology student set out to find scientific proof that plants in the office can reduce stress. In her study, Russell asked participants to take a difficult test in a room filled with plants, and compared their skin conductivity, heart rate and blood pressure with people who completed the same test without plants. Russell’s findings showed that plants eased stress for participants by at least this metric, and that participants recovered from stress more quickly in a plant-heavy environment.

Increased Productivity
In a study published in the “Journal of Environmental Horticulture,” researchers from Washington State University reported that live interior plants helped workers complete tasks with more focus and efficiency. Researchers found that productivity increased by 12 percent in the presence of plants. Additionally, people tested in the room with plants reported feeling about 10 percent more attentive after the task than those tested without plants.

Improves Indoor Air Quality
Growing live plants in the office can help clean the air and even improve your health, according to a NASA study. In 1973, NASA scientists identified 107 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air inside the Skylab space station. Occupants often suffered from burning eyes and respiratory difficulties, later learned to be two of the most common symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome. B.C. “Bill” Wolverton, an environmental scientist working with the U.S. military, discovered that swamp plants actually eliminated Agent Orange from water samples. Expanding on this idea, Wolverton tested out the use of houseplants as a means of improving indoor air quality and discovered growing plants indoors helps eliminate VOCs from the air.  Also found, was that people recovered from illness faster in the presence of plants.

Make Rooms More Comfortable
The recommended humidity range for human health and comfort is between 30 and 60 percent. Many offices fall short of these figures, especially in the summer and winter months. Low interior humidity can lead to increased fatigue, respiratory discomfort and an overall drop in workplace well-being. When plants are added to a room, the relative humidity rose significantly, but not excessively. In one case, relative humidity without plants averaged 25 percent, and with plants it averaged 30 percent – bringing the room into the ideal comfort range.

So what are you waiting for? We think it’s time to turn your office into a more healthy, productive and stress free place where the only thing you have to worry about now is your overdriven undereducated boss who thinks they’re funny!

How to design a healthier office

The health craze has swept the nation over the past several years.  Everywhere you look, there is some kind of new tip that will help you stay the in best possible shape of your life.  While workout and health food tips outside of work are very important, health tips for in the office are of vital importance with the amount of time you spend there.  From office design, to the food you eat, to having plants in the office, there are a myriad of different factors that play into the healthiness of your office lifestyle.
One of the biggest topics of discussion in the office is that of food.  Whether it's what you pack in your lunch, to that 2:30 afternoon snack option, a healthier choice will always benefit you in the long run. It can be easy to to run out of the office on your lunch break and head to the nearest fast food restaurant for a quick cheeseburger. For a healthier alternative however, bringing lunch with you is typically a better choice.  Bringing in some leftover tuna, chicken, or fish with whole grain pastas and beans with be a better source of protein and will satisfy your hunger and energy needs for a lot longer. When it comes to that afternoon snack, instead of grabbing that bag of potato chips or candy bar, bring in some dried fruit or tree nuts as a healthy alternative.

Does your part of the country get dark and gloomy outside during the winter?  Try investing in a "happy light" for the office.  This light therapy acts as a great replacement for vitamin D which you get from the sun.  A happy light in the office can help beat the winter blues and boost morale among you and your coworkers.  Another option to have in the office to boost energy and happiness is having plants around.  Many studies have shown that having plants in the office, or having them visible out of a window in the office has led to happier employees and more overall satisfaction with their job.
How exciting and creative is your workplace? Is your office dominated by cubicles and natural, boring earth tones?  If you can, try and get your workplace more into the 21st century of office design and architecture. Open work spaces that help promote collaboration a teamwork can be a huge energy and confidence boost to your team. Bright splashes of color on the walls and in other areas of your office design will also help boost energy and excitement in the office, making it a more fun place to work for your coworkers or employees.  Modern office design can be a big step for your company in it's overall well being.

Many companies overlook office design as a minimal expense and don't consider the effects it has on their employees.  Making your office a more vibrant and healthier place to work at will only benefit your company in the long run.

Tips on buying the right furniture for your office

A staple in every office across the globe is the furniture. From the chairs, tables, and desks, everything most likely gets used on a regular basis. Picking out the proper furniture is a far more important task than anyone realizes. From the waiting room lobby, to the swivel chair your social media manager sits in for 8 hours a day, each piece of furniture makes an impression on someone whether it's through its comfort, style, or lack thereof. There are many factors that come into picking out office furniture and you have to be sure of your decisions before each thing you choose.

The office chair is quite possibly the most important piece of office furniture your company has at its disposal. Sitting in the office chair all day can lead to a grumpy employee, and employee injuries later in life, especially severe back pain. Comfortable chairs are not only a luxury to the office, but key to maximizing productivity as the workers are sitting for more than eight hours a day, leading to back aches, stiff necks, and irritability. Before you buy office chairs for the company, do some research and find the most ergonomically friendly ones out there.  Happy employees will lead to a happy company, which will make you a happy employer or co-worker.

One of the hottest topics of debate over the past few years on the subject of office furniture has been the standing desk vs. the sitting desk.  While the sitting desk has been a staple of the American workplace since what seems to be the dawn of time, the standing desk has been making a surge in the office  as of late as employers and employees are beginning to realize the benefits of having them available. There are many pros and cons to both desk which can both serve a great purpose in the office. The sitting desk does allow the worker to be able to rest a little bit more and potentially puts them in a more comfortable position. While the negative affects can be back and neck pain over long periods of time. The standing desk on the other hand, will usually provide employees with more energy throughout the day, which will lead to heightened focus and inspiration. On the con side, it is much easier to develop leg pain from standing for several hours on end.

There are many factors that go into buying the proper furniture for you and your team. Make sure you go with the right selection by hiring a professional consultant to give you tips on what desks and chairs are best for you team for their short term and long term productivity and happiness.

How to get ahead in the office without making enemies

The large majority of us are very driven individuals.  We set goals and have high expectations of ourselves.  We want to be the next person Forbes magazine is writing an article on or joining a list of the next millionaires.  Accomplishing these goals are usually easier said than done. To get ahead in our careers, staying focused and being aggressive when opportunities present themselves are key to being successful in the workplace. These tactics however, can often alienate your coworkers and make you the odd man out in your quest to advancing your stature in your current company or outside of that job.

Having your coworkers on your side can be a very beneficial asset in the workplace.  These coworkers can tag team meetings with you, cover work when you're sick, and many other things. If you alienate yourself in your effort to get ahead however, you can paint yourself into a corner and make your work life much more difficult.

One of the ways you can get ahead in your career while keeping your coworkers on your side can be helping them out. Whether it's on a regular conversation with your boss, or another employee, ask them how you can help them or what their biggest problem is for the week.  Offering help will show your initiative, give you invaluable leadership experience, and let your coworkers know you are responsible and they can rely on you during a difficult time at work or when they are swamped with a project.

Do you get the feeling your coworkers already dislike you or are trending toward those feelings?  It could be due to a myriad of reasons.  Being competitive in the workplace is of vital importance if you want to get ahead in your career. Being overly competitive however, can lead to major problems within the workplace and you can create a strong distaste for yourself by your coworkers. Make sure you are not bullying your other coworkers into getting your way. Be competitive,  but realize your ideas may not always be the best.

Another key is to be an open listener and friendly to your coworkers. If your coworkers are threatened by your presence and feel overpowered by your domineering attitude, you will once again alienate yourself and will not help your case in getting ahead.  Everyone likes a team player.

If you're a business professional, you most likely have a strong desire to get ahead in your career and make a better life for yourself. Make sure your pursuit of success doesn't come at the expense of your coworkers suffering or disliking you, however.  Be a good teammate and coworker will show a valuable skill in being able to work well with others, which will only make you a more valuable asset to someones company.
